Joanna Hennon and I are back with another co-hosted episode! Today, we talk about how to fully accept the parts of ourselves that don’t fit in with our self image. This topic was inspired by a listener, who wrote in with the following (edited to remove specific personal details):
“My ‘weirdness’ isn’t so weird for others, but I just have things I’d prefer not to admit. I loooove telling people some things about me, but I am not too keen to share others, like it took me years to admit that I like watching ‘girly’ movies because I see myself as a tough person, someone who likes outdoor stuff, who is ambitious and courageous. Also, because I like to be seen as an intelligent person and the guilty pleasure of reading a girly magazine or watching a girly movie somehow doesn’t fit that image.”
There have been many times in the past where I felt ashamed of my likes and dislikes, and there have been times when I’ve hesitated to be open about certain aspects of myself. It was like I thought I had to fit into a certain identity, and all the parts of me that didn’t coincide with that identity were invalid. Of course, that’s not how it actually works, and life is a lot more fulfilling when we can just accept ourselves for who we are… AND share this with the others in our life.
